A 19-year-old girl has suffered a severe brain infection after she popped a pimple on the tip of her nose using her fingers.
Ms. Yang from China felt pain under the skin around her right eye right after squeezing the pimple on her nose.
A few days later, the teen was rushed to a hospital as she developed a high fever. Her right eye also became red and swollen, local media reported.
Ms. Yang was diagnosed with cavernous sinus thrombosis, a rare and life-threatening condition that occurs when a blood clot blocks a vein that runs through hollow spaces under the brain and behind the eye sockets.
According to WebMD, this condition is serious and up to 30 percent of the cases can result in death.
Ms. Yang’s infection developed after she popped the pimple on the tip of her nose, which is part of an area called the Danger Triangle or ‘Triangle of Death.’
Dr. Han Hun, the deputy director of the department of neurology, said to Ningbo Evening News that the teen was in a critical condition when she was taken to the hospital.
“Her life could be in danger if the condition worsens,” the doctor said as her temperature was 39C (102F).
Ms. Yang is now in stable condition after receiving antibiotic treatments.
Doctors warn that picking at skin inside the area can result in severe implications for your health.
Symptoms of cavernous sinus thrombosis may include severe headache, redness or swelling around one or both eyes, inability to move the eye, fever, drooping eyelids, and fatigue. In some cases, a patient may experience vision loss or double vision, inability to move the eye, seizures, and altered mental status.
