Selina Nguyen from Denver started experiencing flu symptoms before Christmas. Her condition quickly declined after two days and on December 23, she was rushed to the hospital and went into a coma.

Her family found out that the little girl had the H1N1 virus. They were “praying for a miracle,” a friend wrote on a GoFundMe page.

However, her brain became unresponsive for all those weeks that she was in a coma, and surgeries to alleviate the pressure in her skull didn’t help.

The family worked with the hospital to try everything to help their “loving kindhearted and giving child.” But after several weeks without any brain activity, they had to make the most “difficult decision.”

On February 10, Selina’s life support was turned off and she passed away with her family by her side.

Nguyen family wants people to understand the dangers of not having a flu shot and advised parents to take their children to get immunized.

Even though the Centers for Disease Control said that this flu season is milder than last year’s, there is still a big risk. 6 to 7 million people had already been diagnosed with flu and 16 children had passed away midway through January.

Colorado is one of the states in the US with high levels of flu-like illnesses.
