A video uploaded to Twitter by Rachel showed Ben, who has Down syndrome, walking into Mountain Heritage High School’s auditorium. He was handed flowers as he walked in while Randy Newman’s song “You Got a Friend in Me” played.

On the stage, when the curtains pulled open, Rachel appeared to ask Ben if he would be her date to the prom. Ben cried with joy and shouted yes.

“Never in my life did I think asking my childhood best friend to prom would amount to something like this…. I am speechless,” she wrote.

She added, “Ben is so incredibly loved in the community that we live in, and the only reason I filmed and posted the proposal was so that the people who know and love him could enjoy!”

The video has touched the hearts of many, there are some who thought Rachel was just being good-hearted, but she disagrees.

“I don’t think that me asking my friend to prom makes me a good person,” she told CBS News.

Rachel and Ben have known each other their whole lives since they attended Sunday school together. Rachel didn’t know that Ben has Down syndrome until “someone told me eventually and explained it.”

Rachel knows about Ben’s Down syndrome, and despite learning of Ben’s condition, “he’s still just my best friend after that,” she said.
