A 9-year-old girl hid in a closet and made a heartbreaking 911 call after her father shot her mother and two older sisters in a murder-suicide.
46-year-old Joseph McCrimon allegedly killed his wife and her two daughters before committing suicide.
His 9-year-old girl managed to hide in a cupboard and called 911 around 11:15 pm on Monday, said NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig.
Essig said at the news conference, as per New York Post: “She was just calling 911, you know, if you can imagine, it’s horrific, the 911, saying, ‘Daddy was coming over for my birthday, and he shot people.’
“And she was weeping and crying (that she) ‘didn’t have presents.’ It was heartbreaking to hear that. We found her hidden in a closet.”
McCrimon had allegedly killed Rasheeda Barzey, 45, and her two daughters, Solei Spears, 20, and Chloe Spears, 16.
Police rushed to the scene and found the 9-year-old girl in the closet.
Officers said that McCrimon and the mother had a “very rocky” romantic relationship for two decades and “he left in an agitated state to meet her,” according to the New York Times.
Police Commissioner Dermot F. Shea said that he had watched the bodycam footage from responding officers and said: “It would tear your heart out to see the young girl from that crime.”
Shea said that recent shooting incidents are leaving many people “numb” to gun violence.
“I think some are becoming numb to this,” Shea said, WABC-TV reported. “None of us up here are numb to this. These are real people. I spent this morning watching body camera video of that terrible incident last night in Brooklyn. It would tear your heart out to see the little girl from that crime.”
Mayor bill de Blasio described the incident as a “really troubling and tragic situation.”
“My heart goes out for those who have been lost,” he added.
