The police officer who has come under fire after kneeling on George Floyd’s neck moments before the man passed out and died had previously been involved in a series of incidents involving the use of force.
44-year-old Officer Derek Chauvin could be facing murder charges after kneeling on the neck of George Floyd until the man passed out during an arrest.
According to the reports, the same cop, who had been wearing the badge for almost two decades, had previously been involved in several shooting incidents.
In 2006, Chauvin was being investigated along with five other officers after the shooting of Wayne Reyes who allegedly pulled a gun on the cops as they approached him.
Two years later, in 2008, the officer faced another investigation after sending a bullet into the abdomen of Ira Latrell Toles as he was responding to a domestic assault report. Allegedly, the officer shot the man when he tried to grab one of the cops’ firearms.
In 2011, according to MailOnline, Chauvin was once again involved in a shooting incident and the injuring of Leroy Martinez during a police chase.
Chauvin’s partner, Tou Thao, who was also seen in the disturbing video of Floyd’s arrest, was previously accused of using excessive force by kicking and punching a suspect after he was already handcuffed.
On May 25, 2020, both Chauvin and Thao were involved in the arrest of George Floyd who was filmed pleading for help and screaming he couldn’t breathe as Chauvin pressed against his neck with his knee.
After Floyd had passed out, he was taken to the hospital where he allegedly died.
Chauvin and the three other officers involved in the incident have been fired. Meanwhile, as Floyd family’s attorney is calling for murder charges, the FBI has been investigating the case.
