A police expert and former cop claimed Derek Chauvin didn’t use deadly force against George Floyd.

Testifying in Derek Chauvin’s trial, Barry Brodd, a use-of-force expert, insisted that Chauvin’s “control technique” was justified as he defended the disgraced officer saying he was acting “with objective reasonableness.”

According to Brodd, who is a former police officer, Chauvin was not using force but merely applying a control technique as he pinned Floyd to the ground for several minutes.

“It doesn’t hurt. It’s safe for the officer, safe for the suspect and you’re using minimal effort to keep them on the ground,” Brodd told the court.

He also insisted that the police didn’t have to “fight fair” on the day of George Floyd’s arrest as he claimed they had to react accordingly to the suspect’s resistance.

As Brodd added, one should try to look into the situation from an officer’s perspective to really understand what had happened rather than “sit and judge in an office.”

Taking aim at Brodd’s choice of words was Prosecutor Steve Schleicher who asked the police expert if he truly believed Chauvin’s position on top of Floyd was “unlikely to produce pain.”

While Brodd admitted that the position could result in pain, he attempted to direct the conversation to Chauvin’s intent before getting stopped by the prosecutor.

“Not the officer’s intent sir. Regardless of the officer’s intent, if this act could produce pain would you agree that this could be a use of force?” Schleicher added as the prosecution showed a picture of Chauvin kneeling on the suspect’s neck.

“Shown in this picture, that could be use of force,” Brodd responded before attempting to defend the “technique” saying Floyd had become non-compliant. “I see his arm position. A compliant person would have both their hands in the small of their back and be resting comfortably.”
