Gene Deitch Who Won Oscar And Directed Tom And Jerry Dies At 95


The director of Tom and Jerry has passed away at the age of 95.

The show has been running for decades and has been the best part of almost everyone’s childhood.

The chasing of Jerry and his brilliant ways to beat Tom in the fight was both hilarious and amusing. Although the show lacked dialogues, it had touched the hearts of almost all of its viewers.

Gene Deitch, the Oscar-winning illustrator died a few days back at his Prague apartment. Petr Himmel, his Czech publisher noted that the show’s director passed away unexpectedly.

Gene or Eugene Merrill Deitch had directed 13 episodes of the beloved cartoon as well as some episodes of the Popeye series.

He worked as North American Aviation’s draftsman before he was drafted for military and entered pilot training. After he was discharged due to medical reasons, Gene Deitch began living in Prague from 1959 after which his career began.

Munro, his movie, won the Academy Award in 1960 for Best Animated Short Film. In 1964, he was nominated for the same award two times for How to Avoid Friendship and Here’s Nudnik.

Earlier, Gene had made the Tom Terrific series and Sidney’s Family Tree that he co-produced also was nominated in 1958 for an Academy Award.

The Oscar-winning illustrator is survived by his three sons from the first marriage and his wife.

All of his sons are cartoonists as well. His fans expressed their condolences and appreciation towards his work on Twitter.

One of the users commented that they were happy because Gene was finally getting all the attention which he deserved, and added that Gene would be missed forever.
