A recent poll has suggested that just over half of young adults are attracted exclusively to the other gender.

Suggesting that times are changing and that expressing sexuality no longer has to be a one-sided subject, an Ipsos Mori poll revealed that nearly half of young people are not attracted exclusively to one sex.

While the poll included 1,005 young adults from the US and 1,127 from the UK, just over 50 percent of people aged from 18 to 24 confirmed they’re “only attracted to those of the opposite sex,” meaning that nearly half of the participants were open-minded when it comes to dating people of the same sex.point 254 | 1

As The Times reported, however, the results changed big time when people from other age groups were asked the same questions. While 76 percent of people aged from 41 to 54 said they were only attracted to the opposite gender, more than 80% of those aged from 55 to 75 said they were strictly heterosexual.

According to Karen Blair, a psychology professor and sexual orientation expert, the shift in sexuality is clearly seen in younger generations because people are no longer pressured into being heterosexual.

“The increases at least partially represent an increase in willingness and ability to come out. Each recent generation has faced fewer and fewer external pressures to conform to heterosexuality,” the Trent University professor told the publication.

Meanwhile, a Gallup survey suggests that 5.6% of Americans identified as LGBTQ in 2020 as compared to only 3.5% back in 2012 and 4.5% back in 2017. While 15.9% of surveyed Gen Z members confirmed they were LGBTQ in the 2020 survey, just 2% of baby boomers did the same.

“One of the main reasons LGBT identification has been increasing over time is that younger generations are far more likely to consider themselves to be something other than heterosexual,” Jeff Jones of Gallup wrote.

“The pronounced generational differences raise questions about whether higher LGBT identification in younger than older Americans reflects a true shift in sexual orientation, or if it merely reflects a greater willingness of younger people to identify as LGBT.”
