It’s in our blood to be rebellious. This applies to life and also to real estate and planning regulations. A hidden feature in Hamdi Almasri and Reeta Herzallah’s garage caught the attention of the authorities.

The husband and wife are both doctors who live in the small town of Enderby in Leicestershire. Their home appears to be a two-story brick on a busy highway. This property comprises of a garage that can hold a single car. This simple structure isn’t something that would catch your attention.

But a hidden feature of their garage has grabbed all the eyeballs towards itself. The property was built with a dedicated garage in the plan.

This was done to avoid parking trouble on the street. However, in October 2015, the couple received an order were breaching the regulations.

On investigation, it was found that Almasri and Herzallah had built tall fencing that prevented vehicles from being parked in designated areas. They had also constructed an illegal access road that proved to be a shortcut from their property towards the busy street.

The couple had transformed their garage into compact living quarters.  These modifications had not been approved by the legal authorities.  It was a breach of the permissions. The owners can appeal against the authorities if they feel that they haven’t done anything illegal.

The couple had appealed to the district council in 2016 to retain their changes, but it was turned down. They faced similar rejection when they appealed to a higher body.

When the officials came for a visit to their residence, they discovered a large door across the front garage. When they looked at it, they found smaller doors and windows. The council suspects that it was occupied by an employee of the doctors.
