It’s amazing how a lot of what was considered science fiction a few decades ago are now everyday items that no one gives much thought about (except for what upgraded model to get next year).

Take, for instance, the sci-fi “personal palm computer” of the 1990’s that was supposed to wearable at the wrist or fit in the palm of one hand. Back then, one needed a personal computer or a laptop to do anything more complicated.

Nowadays, grab any iPhone or Samsung smartphone and you can see that they are several magnitudes more powerful than the best PCs of the 90’s. In fact, there are some people who spend more time on their smartphones than in front of their personal computers especially if they’re always on the go yet they don’t really lose out on what they can do on the smartphone versus what they can do on the PC.

What was once sci-fi is slowly becoming science reality and another step was taken in this field when a designer named Eugeni Quitllet revealed concept art for the GalaXsea Project which aims to be the first space solar sailboat that will be 3D-printed in space.

Quitllet said, “I remember when the future was about leaving Earth in a boring rocket or an individual capsule.point 207 |

The name of the project is a play on the words galaxy and sea and encapsulates the overarching goal of combining science with the aesthetics of space exploration. The designer added, “Future is the point of view of the artist who takes a step back, seeking the bigger picture of reality and imagination.”

It’s an ambitious dream for sure but then again, much of what we consider common now was only made possible through the dreams of pioneers at a time when many thought realizing those dreams was impossible.

Quitllet continued, “It’s a continuous project that keeps growing, with unique pieces that you can only find there, designed in space for a better life on Earth.”
