Lady Gaga is celebrating the fierceness of pop music and stressing the importance of wearing masks at all times – simultaneously, at that! The Queen of Pop was nominated on 9 categories on this year’s first virtual MTV VMAs on Sunday evening.
Her live rendition of the hit collab ‘Rain On Me’ with Ariana Grande, along with four other awards, has earned her the prestigious Moonperson trophies. It was the first live performance for the singer who released her recent album Chromatica earlier this year, due to COVID-19 restricting live performance venues, tours almost unlikely.
And as always, shining through her regained status as the Pop Icon, she rose to the occasion, sporting different looks with each different awards, while sporting fashionable masks at all occasions. Her collaborator Ariana, with Gaga doing a medley of her album, has agreed to put on masks during the entirety of the performance.
The performance started as a tribute, with Britney Spears and N*Sync from an old MTV VMAs event, with her performing 911, Rain On Me and Stupid Love all cut from the same Chromatica album.
In all of her wins, the most impressive one had to be the MTV Tricon Award, which was a replacement of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
This particular Moonperson was dedicated to a figure who had been a successful conqueror of three main divisions of showbiz – music, acting and activism.Along with the extra recognition she got for her contribution to fashion, the award seemed like a seamlessly designed award just for her.
In he acceptance speech, she went on to give an impact: “I truly never could’ve imagined that someday I would be given an award like this that honored me for so many of my passions,” she said.
She also went on to acknowledge her fans: “I want to share this award with everybody at home tonight.
Everybody at home that is their own form of a Tricon.” Concerned with the state that the world is in right now, she urged audiences to “think right now of three things that define who you are and take a moment to reward yourself for your bravery”.
Then a truly heartfelt message to the rest of the world” “I know a renaissance is coming and the wrath of pop culture will inspire you and the rage of art will empower you as it responds to hardship with its generosity and love.”
She ended her speech in the most needed sentence that America and the rest of the world really needed to hear: “Wear a mask, it’s a sign of respect.” Gaga has won over the categories of: artist of the year along with song of the year, best collaboration, and best cinematography for “Rain on Me” with Ariana Grande.
