Imagine how exhausting it would be to walk four miles every day.

For Gabe, a second-grader living in Nebraska with his mom, this was his daily routine. Since he was so little, it took him about four hours everyday just to go back and forth from school.

This was because according to the state law, school buses aren’t allowed to pick up children who live within four miles of the school.

While this may not seem such a big deal to others, it was for Kim Bellus and her second-grade son.
Being a full-time student, she could not afford to get a car.

As a result, Kim and her son Gabe walked up and down the hills every single day to get him to school.
Even though Kim had tried to get help from the school and the administration board, nothing worked.

In a televised interview with the KMTV, Gabe said, “I’m kind of tired. I’m really tired when I get back.”

And Kim was definitely not looking forward to winter. Once the temperature goes down and gets windy, the walk was going to be extra difficult.

One day, however, a miracle happened.

As Kim and Gabe were walking back to home, a car suddenly pulled up right beside them.

The woman in the vehicle was Becky Novotny, a stay-at-home mom who lived nearby.
She asked if Kim and Gabe were the ones who recently interviewed with the KMTV. When Kim nodded and replied yes, Becky said the unthinkable!

“I took them home,” said Becky. She then said, “We set up the deal where I’d come and get him and drop him off every day so he doesn’t have to walk.”

It turned out that one of Becky’s three children attends the same school as Gabe. So, this incredibly convenient carpool was arranged.

“If I was in the same situation, I think I’d want someone to help me,” said Becky.
She also added, “It’s a small town. You’re there for everybody.”

And, Kim was more than grateful for what Becky offered.

I had nowhere else to turn. I tried with the school. I tried with the administration. I tried particularly with the school itself, so I greatly appreciate you guys’ help” said Kim.
