A former paramedic is working to fulfill the final wishes of patients who are terminally ill by taking them on their last journey.
60-year-old Kees Veldboer from the Netherlands who is the founder of Stitching Ambulance Wens (Ambulance Wish Foundation) has offered more than 14,000 of such patients with their final journey in a customized ambulance.
He is currently working during the COVID-19 pandemic too. Veldboer, through the foundation, drives terminally ill patients to places they would like to be at one last time or the places they would like to bid their final goodbye.
Mark Rutte, the Dutch Prime Minister has implemented the intelligent lockdown where businesses involving direct contacts like hairdressers and barbers have been ordered to shut.
Residents have been advised to remain indoors but they can go out as long as they stay 1.5 meters or more away from each other.
While many people are choosing to remain in their homes, Veldboer can get out with the patients. He revealed that currently, he is facing unparalleled demand for terminally ill patients asking him to take them to see blooming tulip fields.
Veldboer explained that since the country is not under complete lockdown, his organization is able to fulfill the wishes of dying patients even during the coronavirus.
He added that they could go to flower gardens, open spaces, an empty zoo, seashores, and parks because it is not forbidden.
He further said that as long as they visit open spaces with very few people around and with only one or two patients, it was fine.
Talking about the requests he has received, he revealed that one patient asked to meet his pet horse for the last time while the other requested to see their boat.
Veldboer came up with the idea when he was transferring one patient between different hospitals and there was a delay.
To pass time, he asked the patient if they would want to be taken anywhere for the last time and they replied they wanted to see Rotterdam Harbour. After a year, he set up his foundation.
