Most everybody agrees with the importance of social distancing in the era of Covid-19.
However, a video of a woman being tased after resisting a cop’s orders to wear masks during a middle school football game has reignited debates as to where the right line is to this issue.
According to the local news, a lady who has since been identified as one Alecia Kitts can be first seen talking with a police officer who approached her to wear a mask. In the video that has been uploaded to Youtube, the officer faces difficulty for 2 minutes as she resisted orders.
For instance, although the officer asked her to put her hands behind her head, Kitts can be heard yelling that she has done nothing wrong and that the officer can’t arrest her for not wearing a mask. At one point, the woman can be heard telling the officer to get off her.
After failing to put the situation under control, the officer turned to using a taser on the woman. Following the tasing, Kitts rolls down one layer from the bleachers. A voice picked up in the radio sounds shocked that an officer would tase someone over a mask.
Kitts’ mother, who witnessed the entire situation, begged to the officer to stop taking her daughter away. Her reasoning was that it is not right to do what they are doing to her daughter over nothing else but the use of a mask in a public space.
Video footage and comments from witnesses suggest that Kitts likely had an American-flag themed mask in her pocket but was not wearing it. According to the school’s admins, Kitts and her mother were the only crowd out of 300 that refused to comply with orders.
The school emphasized that the mandatory use of masks has been the number one condition since the team was permitted to resume having guests in the bleachers. The local police department said they have launched an investigation into this incident.
Based on the school and the team’s explanation, there is simply no way that Kitts and her mother were unfamiliar with the rules because it was not only emphasized when entering the stadium but also was constantly on the PA system.
