A quick-thinking police officer was caught on camera saving a choking baby’s life in front of the newborn’s desperate mother.
The dramatic rescue occurred at Sterling Heights in Michigan where Officer Cameron Maciejewski was called to a family home and tended to a 3-week-old baby who lost consciousness after choking while drinking milk.
In the footage taken by the camera of the police cruiser, Maciejewski is seen bringing the baby girl to the car hood as her hysterical mother cries and pleads for help.
Holding the baby in his hands, the officer said: “Okay, calm down, calm down. Let me see the baby.”
As the mother paced around the officer desperately, Maciejewski performed back thrusts and managed to clear the baby’s airway.
Shortly after laying the baby on her stomach and performing back thrusts, the baby started crying and the officer reassured the mother and the people gathered outside the home that the baby is going to be okay.
“He’s crying, he’s crying, he’s okay … It’s okay, he’s crying, he’s okay,” the officer patiently told the newborn’s mother as she collapsed to the ground.
After additional emergency services arrived at the scene, they found out that the baby started choking while drinking milk from a bottle.
Following the incident, the police also praised Officer Cameron Maciejewski for his “lifesaving actions” and admitted that the outcome could be devastating if it wasn’t for him.
“If it wasn’t for Officer Maciejewski’s quick, calm, lifesaving actions, the outcome of this incident could have been tragically different,” the Sterling Heights Police Department insisted in a statement.
“Not only did the officer save the baby, but the officer did an outstanding job consoling the family.”
