“Today, we are able to breathe again,” Floyd’s brother, Philonise, said at the conference. “George means freedom for all.”

Teary Philonise liked his brother to the 1955 Mississippi lynching victim Emmett Ill except that this time, there were cameras to show the whole world what exactly happened.

Floyd’s daughter, Gianna, also attended the press conference along with other family members.

Another brother, Terrence Floyd, said that the verdict was not only important for their family but also for history.

“I will miss him, but now I know he’s in history,” Terrence said. “What a day to be a Floyd, man.”

The jury reached its verdict on Tuesday after ten and a half hours of deliberation.

Chauvin was transferred to Oak Park Heights, the only Level 5 maximum-security prison in the state.

It has space for up to 473 prisoners and is regarded as one of the safest for high-risk inmates.

Only one person has been killed within the facility since it opened in 1982, and no offender has ever escaped.

Chauvin will be considered a suicide risk so he will be closely monitored to ensure his safety.
