As the US struggles with what experts are recognizing as the second wave Covid-19 infections, southern states have emerged as new epicenters for the pandemic. Of them, Florida has been struck the hardest; for 4 consecutive days, the death toll in the state set a record.
On Friday, a record breaking 257 deaths have been reported in the state of Florida due to Covid-19. The daily toll brings the total number of deaths to 6,843 in the state.
Making things worse, many experts believe that the numbers will continue to exacerbate before they improve. One local epidemiologist explained that the recently skyrocketing figures are the results of an aggressive reopening plan, and it remains to be seen if the curve will flatten out.
As of this writing, the state ranks 7th in the US for death tolls and 2nd in the total number of Covid-19 cases just behind California, the most populous state in America.
However, Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has interpreted the numbers in a positive light. According to him, the gap between the number of cases and deaths shows how the doctors have learned the different ways to treat a patient so that he or she does not reach a fatal level.
Saying that there are a few indicators that seem to suggest that the situation is improving, DeSantis pointed out decreased visits to the hospital as evidence.
The governor also noted how the rate of people who test positive for the virus has hit a new low in the last 14 days. Although he urged the residents to adhere to health regulations, DeSantis said he believed the worst has already passed in his state.
However, his Democrat counterparts were not as optimistic in interpreting the numbers. For one, they point out how DeSantis has still refused to mandate the wearing of a facial mask when Floridians leave their houses. This was also pointed out by the House of Representatives.
Some believe that the actual situation may not have improved by much. They point out to how most of the testing grind to a halt as the state prepares for Hurricane Isaias.
