On Saturday night, May 5, a dozen of Florida police officers dressed up to perfection as they were getting ready to escort special needs students to their high school prom.
After picking up their dates at John I. Leonard High School, the cops had a night off which they used to hang out and party with the students.
The police department documented the whole event, and soon the pictures and videos of cops hitting the dance floor together with the students have gone viral.
Approaching the end of the night, eight of the cops and six of the students posed for the final picture which was, later on, shared on Twitter under the caption: “We came. We danced. We rocked prom.”
Allegedly, the idea to accompany the students to the prom came from Scott Harris, a retired officer whose wife is a passionate special education teacher. According to the couple, the special needs students should be encouraged to have just as much dancing and fun as everyone else does on their special day.
“It’s amazing to see these young kids that don’t have the opportunity to come do this be here today,” Harris said. “They’re awesome kids and now they’re mingling with all the other kids doing the same thing that the kids that don’t have the disabilities are doing.”
“As much as tonight means to these students, it means the world to us to be able to escort them to their prom,” the officers expressed in their Twitter post.
