In a still developing story, five children were found dead in their house in Solingen, Germany.
According to German media reports, the children were killed by their own mother, who then tried to end her own life by throwing herself in the train tracks.
However, the police have stated that the mother has survived the oncoming train albeit with serious injuries. The five children were said be between the ages of 1 and 8. The oldest child, who is 11 years old, was not injured during this tragic event.
As of now, it is unclear as to who called the emergency service, although some reports say it was the children’s grandmother that contacted the authorities. When the medical team rushed to the scene, it was already too late to save the children despite the team’s best efforts.
Simultaneously, it is being reported that the mother threw herself in the rails in Dusseldorf’s Central Station, approximately 20 miles away from the town of Solingen. Deutsch Bahn, the German rail operators, confirmed that the Dusseldorf rails were closed because a doctor was on it.
The German police have begun investigating the exact cause of the children’s death. In the mean time, dozens of officers and vehicles have been dispatched to the scene both to protect the evidence and to shoo off any intruders or excessive reporting.
