A fisherman has posed with a rare catch after reeling in an alien-looking fish with giant, bulbous eyes that he had never seen before.
As 19-year-old Oscar Lundahl from Norway explained, he was on a fishing trip off the coast of Andoya when a mysterious creature got caught on his hook.
According to the young fishing guide, he was using a mackerel bait with four hooks in an attempt to catch fish at 2,600 feet deep.
Much to Oscar’s surprise, however, he caught a rare fish known as ratfish that goes by the name of ‘Chimaeras Monstrosa Linnaeus’ in Latin.
“We were looking for blue halibut which is a rare species about five miles off shore. I had four hooks on one line and felt something quite big on the end of it,” Oscar recalled.
“It took me about 30 minutes to reel it in because it was 800 meters deep. There were two halibut on two of the hooks and I was really happy about that and then I saw there was something else.
“It was pretty amazing. I have never seen anything like it before. It just looked weird, a bit dinosaur-like. I didn’t know what it was but my colleague did.”
As the college explained to the young fisherman, the ratfish species is a distant relative of shark that predates the dinosaurs as it used to wander the seas as far as 300 million years ago.
“Despite its ugly appearance, it was really tasty. It is a bit like cod but tastier,” the teen, who made sure his rare catch didn’t go in vain, admitted after eating the fish.
