The deadly bushfires in New South Wales have claimed the lives of two brave firefighters, both of who had been volunteering on the most dangerous of places for more than ten years.
Geoffrey Keaton, 32, and Andrew O’Dwyer, 36, embraced death after their truck hit a fallen tree and went rolling off the road at Buxton, south of Sydney.
Both men will always be remembered as heroes by the Australian firefighters as well as the whole nation.
Speaking of the tragic loss, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said: “They were bravely defending their communities with an unmatched spirit and a dedication that will forever set them apart amongst our most courageous Australians.
“Their sacrifice and service saving lives and saving properties will be forever remembered. I wish those injured all the best in their recovery.”
Andrew, a dad of three, shared a video of himself fighting the flames just a few hours before the tragic incident took place.
Geoffrey, a dad of one, had recently obtained the position of deputy captain after working selflessly since 2006.
In another grim occurring, two firefighters had to be placed in induced coma after receiving severe burns by the ruthless blazes.
The firefighters, 56 and 28, had burns on their faces and legs and were shifted to Concord Hospital via an air ambulance.
There were three other firefighters present with Andrew and Geoffrey at the time of the accident. All five of them were shifted to a hospital right after the incident took place.
To honor the two martyrs, flags throughout the New South Wales area were mounted at half-mast.
Rob Rogers, the deputy commissioner of New South Wales Rural Fire Service, said: “I understand they were a pretty tight-knit group.
“This is quite a tight brigade and that will impact significantly on that group.
“At the end of the day everybody feels for these people and their families… people have got to try and put that aside and keep going.”
