Ten Dead And Several Injured As Massive Fire Erupts At Hospital’s ICU


A massive fire that erupted at the intensive care unit of a hospital resulted in at least ten fatalities and several critical injuries.

The blaze took place in Piatra Neamt, northern Romania, where two hospital rooms located in the Covid-19 ward burned to a crisp before the firefighters were able to put out the flames.

According to the Emergency Situations Inspectorate spokesperson, Irina Popa, a total of sixteen patients were stationed in the two intensive care rooms when the fire broke out. As the spokeswoman added, some of the patients “were infected with Covid-19.”

While at least ten people died in the incident, several are still fighting for their lives and remain in critical condition after suffering severe burns.

Besides patients, a doctor stationed in the Covid-19 ward also sustained critical injuries. As Stiri du Bucovina reported, the doctor’s burns cover 80% of his body.

Following the incident, the surviving victims of the blaze were transferred to an Iași hospital where they are being treated for their burns.

According to Nelu Tataru, the health minister of Romania, the hospital fire was “most likely triggered by a short circuit.”
