The fire comes more than a year after the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris was engulfed in blaze, which destroyed its main spire and roof.

According to reports, the blaze had sparked behind the grand organ. The cathedral’s stained-glass windows were also destroyed but the damage was not as bad as they first thought.

Nantes Major Johanna Rolland said: “It is a part of our history, a part of our heritage. We have all have these images in mind, this story in our hearts, but at this stage the situation does not seem to be comparable to that of 1972.”

“We are not in a Notre Dame de Paris scenario. The roof has not been touched,” local fire chief Ferlay added.

During World War Two, the cathedral was party destroyed after Allied bombings. A 1972 fire also completely damaged its roof but was rebuilt with a concrete structure 13 years later.
