Many of us have been receiving a hoax message that wants to convince us our accounts have been hacked. The message came after Facebook admitted that a security breach had affected 50 million accounts, including FB boss Mark Zuckerberg’s account.
The hoax message doesn’t contain virus but it tells users their accounts have been hacked or cloned, which means someone has made a new account that uses their photos and personal information.
“Hi….I actually got another friend request from you yesterday…which I ignored so you may want to check your account,” the message reads.
Then, it instructs users to pass on the message to all their FB friends. “Hold your finger on the message until the forward button appears…then hit forward and all the people you want to forward to….I had to do the people individually. Good Luck!”
A spokesperson said: “We’ve heard that some people are seeing posts or messages about accounts being cloned on Facebook.
It takes the form of a “chain mail” type of notice. We haven’t seen an increase in incoming reports of impersonation (cloned accounts).
The volume of these types of posts isn’t a good measure for how often impersonation is actually happening.”
Here’s how to tell if your Facebook account has been compromised.
Go to Settings section of the site and click the Security login tab. From here, you will see where and from which device your account has been accessed.
If you notice some devices or locations that you don’t recognize, you can report them as suspicious by clicking Not You button.
You can also check all posts appearing on your account and make sure that they are written by you. Delete or ignore suspicious friend requests – especially if you don’t know them.
Protect your account
The best way to protect your account is by changing your password frequently. You can also enable a two-factor authentication, which will then require a code that sent to your phone before accessing your account.
Two-factor authentication prevents hackers from opening your account even if they know your password.
SHARE this info with your family and friends so they can also check if their FB accounts are compromised!
