Ed Gernon, from California, adopted a stray dog back in 2015. He said that the dog was dangerous as he had trust issues and with all his life living on the streets, he learned to survive on his own.
However, Ed willingly took the stray into his home and named the German shepherd mix Rex. After a month Rex was adopted they went out for a walk in the neighborhood. They came across a tiny hummingbird that was lying on the ground featherless, motionless, and covered in ants.
Seeing the dismal bird, Rex stood protectively over it. They brought the tiny bird home and nursed it back to health. Ed patiently fed the bird with the special sugary mixture at every 15 minutes.
He used a hairdryer to help the bird regain its flying abilities. He said that when the whole world wanted to kill this tiny creature, Rex stood protectively over the bird and this was the motivation that pushed Ed to go the distance in trying to save the bird.

Today, the trio lives together and Hummer (they named the bird), took to Rex in a big way. Rex shares his water bowl with Hummer, which Hummer often fancies as a bathtub.
It is truly a treat to see how animals of two different species grow a fondness for each other.
