Two female astronauts have made history after finishing the first-ever spacewalk consisting of females only.

The first-of-its-type spacewalk was a part of NASA repair mission during which astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch took to the space to fix a malfunctioning power controller.

The operation took place on the International Space Station (ISS), whereas the mission was supposed to take place back in March but was postponed due to issues with the women’s spacesuits.

Praising the pair for their achievement was Kathy Sullivan, the first female spacewalker from America who completed her mission 35 years ago, who said she was thrilled by the historical milestone.

NASA also congratulated the two women for proving that “hard work can lead you to great heights.”

“Our achievements provide inspiration to students around the world, proving that hard work can lead you to great heights, and all students should be able to see themselves in those achievements,” their spokesperson said.

According to Koch, the operation was particularly important to her and her partner because it helps close in on the gap between genders.

In addition to this success, Koch is also set to break the record for the longest single spaceflight done by a female astronaut, as she will remain in space until 2020.

“There are a lot of people who derive motivation from inspiring stories from people who look like them, and I think that it´s an important aspect of the story to tell,” Koch said in a NASA briefing.
