A young father was killed by thieves after trying to stop them from driving off in his van which they had stolen from his driveway.
33-year-old Jose DeJesus Berrelleza from Anaheim, California, was run over by his own van after rushing to his driveway in an attempt to stop thieves from stealing the vehicle.
The incident occurred at around 6.20 in the morning when Mr. Berrelleza, the father of an 8-year-old daughter, noticed thieves stealing the van parked on his driveway.
After confronting the van thieves, the 33-year-old was ran over and died at the scene.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the police later arrested three suspects who were found in the man’s van some one and a half miles away from his home.
While 21-year-old Yesenia Escareno and 28-year-old Omar Sanchez were booked into jail on carjacking and murder charges, 29-year-old Adriana Gomez has been accused of being an accessory to the despicable acts.
“It is believed Berrelleza, the father of an 8-year-old daughter, attempted to stop the theft of the vehicle to prevent the loss of his livelihood,” the Anaheim Police Department confirmed in a statement.
Following the tragic death of the 33-year-old, a GoFundMe page has been set up in support of his wife and their daughter.
“He was only 33 years old. He was a strong and hardworking individual always looking out for his family, especially his daughter. He had lots of plans for them,” the page reads.
“The best memories she will cherish were their wild camping trips. Jesus was adventurous and was teaching his daughter to be adventurous and brave just like him.
“An 8-year old that will no longer build new memories with her Papa. Her Papa is no longer here to provide and fight for her. Jesus was hard working and dedicated to his family.
“He will forever be missed and we will forever hold him close to our hearts. We ask for your support to please share his story to help fight for justice.”
