According to the man, he and his wife were struggling to find a name they would both like for their daughter. After the baby girl’s birth, he went on to ask his sister-in-law for advice on names after she paid the family a visit.

Once the sister told them about her list of potential names for her future children, the couple immediately fell in love with one of the names – Freya – and decided to use it for their baby girl.

As the father explained, his wife’s sister agreed they could use the baby for their daughter because she “wasn’t planning on having children soon and would probably come up with more names later.”

Once the couple already grew close to the name chosen for their daughter, however, everything changed as the woman’s sister learned that she’s pregnant.

“We were really happy for her, but then they came over to talk and asked us to change our daughter’s name because she wanted to use it for her baby,” the man wrote in his post.

“We have been calling my daughter Freya for the last week and a half, and we already feel pretty attached to the name, plus she already said we could have it.

“So we asked her if she could just use a different name and she got mad and said she had the name picked out since she was 15. We feel kind of bad but she doesn’t even know if the baby will be a girl.”

After asking Reddit for advice, people were left divided, whereas some supported the father while others accused him of stealing the name from his sister-in-law.

“You knew she really wanted that name. She was a fool for telling you the names she loves. If the baby is already born, it’s unreasonable to ask you to change her name now,” someone wrote.

“Changing a name after the baby is born is an ordeal. If she feels that strongly about it, it’s not that big of a deal to have two kids in the family with the same name,” another one said.

One person suggested: “If she didn’t want you to use the name, she shouldn’t have suggested it.”
