The father of two sisters, 12-year-old Chasey Scaravilli and 14-year-old Scout Scaravilli, says he does not blame anyone for their deaths as he speaks of his heartbreak.
The two young sisters from Ohio were lying in a hammock tied between a brick pillar and a tree when the pillar collapsed and fell on them.
Fire crews and police arrived at the home in Cleveland Heights to free the girls from the debris. The sisters were rushed to a hospital where they later passed away from severe injuries.
The girls’ heartbroken father, JJ Scaravilli, told WKYC: “I don’t blame anybody, I don’t blame myself, I don’t blame those girls.
“I looked at it 100 times. I never thought a brick pillar would come down like that – it was never in my mind.”
JJ said that he was taking a nap in the backyard when the pillar suddenly collapsed.
“Accidents happen. They were a gift and they’re needed someplace else now,” JJ expressed, adding that his children are in his heart and in heaven.
He also said that his children loved playing in the backyard.
JJ also said that he “always thought they were the most beautiful creatures and they are definitely beautiful. But their real beauty is and was on the inside and it still is on the inside.”
The heartbroken family has planted two trees in the place where the incident had occurred.
The Hathaway Brown School released a statement about the students’ passing.
“The entire HB community is saddened by the loss of the Scaravilli sisters; they will be greatly missed by so many friends, classmates, and teachers. Our thoughts and prayers are dedicated to their family,” the statement said.
