A young father was fatally shot in Iowa while attending the funeral of his 8-year-old son who passed away after a long battle with cancer.
The incident happened in Davenport, Iowa, where 26-year-old Jeramie Shorter, who was reportedly a father-of-seventeen, arrived at Weerts Funeral Home to pay his final goodbyes to his 8-year-old deceased son.
Once at the parking lot of the funeral home, Shorter allegedly got into a fight with another attendee who eventually pulled out a gun and fatally shot the father.
Following the deadly confrontation, the police have arrested 24-year-old Nuemonei Tre Vonne Laster and charged him with first-degree murder.
As of this writing, it is unclear whether the two men knew each other or not. Moreover, the authorities have not yet revealed a motive for the killing.
“Him losing his son. I’m losing my grandson to cancer that he fought for many years. We went through that two weeks ago, then to go through this? Now I don’t have him. It’s hard,” Jeramie’s father, Jamie Delaney Shorter, said in an interview with KWQC after the funeral.
“Why would you want to bring a gun to a kid’s wake? To a baby’s wake? No matter what’s going on. Where was your mind thinking?”
As the upset father added, his son never should have lost his life in front of his kids of whom many still “don’t understand what’s going on.”
The father also insisted his son “was a loving person” with a “big smile” who loved all of his children “unconditionally.”
“He loved his kids. That’s all that mattered… He loved them all unconditionally and they all love their dad,” he added. “Everybody always used to say about how many kids he had but now that he’s gone that’s all we have to hold on to.”
As Mr. Shorter explained, he will make sure to be there for his grandkids now that their father is gone and teach them to pray and ask God for help.
