Only days after Mr. Mao’s daughter was born, the girl passed away due to the lack of oxygen and died on her sixth day on this world. Six days earlier, “little edamame’s” mother passed away during childbirth.

Before taking the girl away for transplants, the girl’s father requested the doctors to let the 6-day-old spend her final moments with the toy her late mother had made for her.

As the hospital in Zhejiang confirmed, ‘edamame’ is the youngest person to ever donate organs in the Chinese province.

According to Mr. Mao, he wanted his daughter to “carry on living and feeling the world in another way” which is why he signed the agreement.

“She was a kindergarten teacher and liked children a lot,” Mao added, explaining that his late wife would approve of the idea without a doubt.

As the doctors confirmed, the 6-day-old died from a rare condition called birth asphyxia that results in a lack of blood flow and oxygen that the baby receives from the placenta.

The condition happens in approximately 15 out of 10,000 deliveries in developed countries. Babies who survive the condition might suffer from developmental delays and even cerebral palsy.
