A 45-year-old father called his wife to say goodbye minutes before he jumped in front of a moving train with his 5-year-old daughter.
Fernando Balbuena died when he threw himself on the oncoming train while his daughter miraculously survived.
The suicidal father made a disturbing call to his wife, Niurka Caraballo, moments before the incident.
Luis Sanchez, a family friend, said that Carabello suspected something was off when she talked to Balbuena before he left their apartment with 5-year-old Ferni.
“She couldn’t understand what he was saying. It wasn’t coming through,” Sanchez shared. “But she got the feeling that something was very, very wrong.”
A police said to the New York Daily News that the father told his wife: “Goodbye. Take care of the kids.”
After the call, Caraballo immediately ran to the station and when she got there, she learned that her husband had jumped in front of a train with their daughter in his arms.
Fortunately, the girl managed to escape the tragedy physically unscathed.
Many commuters saw the terrifying moment Balbueno jumped on the platform with the child.
One of the two people who helped rescue Fernie, Jairo Torres, told the Daily News: “I was paralyzed at first, just like everyone.
“But then I just jumped… I didn’t do it to be a hero… it was immediate.”
Cesar Dominguez, another witness, prepared for the worst as they looked under the train. The two bodies were motionless until the girl shifted.
“When she moved her hand I said thank God she’s alive,” Torres expressed. “I said to myself: “The girl is alive, the girl is alive!
“It was the first thing I thought of, because there’s always a space between the train and the track. I knew in my heart she was alive.”
Torres stayed on the scene until the girl’s mother arrived. “She hugged me and thanked me and cried of course,” he said.
Caraballo told the Daily News: “Medically, thank God, everything is fine — she doesn’t have any fractures.”
Speaking about Balbuena, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Caraballo said: “He is not a bad person. I don’t know what was going through his mind in that moment, but he’s not like that. He loved this little girl.”
Authorities are still investigating the incident.
