A 44-year-old father has been charged after he took the lives of his four children as his wife served him divorce papers.
Subusiso Mpungose allegedly waited until his wife, 42-year-old Xolisile, went to work before taking a string of taxis to pick up three of his kids from a school and crèche.
He took his 4-year-old son, Kuhlekonke, 6-year-old daughter, Khwezi, and 10-year-old son, Sphesihile, back to their house and sent the oldest boy to buy some snacks.
While the eldest son went to store, he hanged his two younger children using their school belts. When Sphesihile returned with treats, he also suffered the same fate but in a different room.
Armed police discovered the three poor children hanging in their school uniform.
Mpungose tricked his wife’s daughter to come out of school. He then hanged her in woods.
Xolisile first became worried when she saw unusual activity on her taxi App. It showed trips taken by Mpungose between their home and the children’s school. She then went to the police station and said she was scared of him and was terrified to return home alone.
A police team took her home and discovered the locks had been changed. They broke the door down and found three lifeless children.
The frantic mother informed the officers about her 16-year-old daughter, Ayakha, and feared her husband may have also gone after her.
Officers found the teen in her school uniform hanging dead from a tree.
The 44-year-old father went on the run and was found the next day. It has been alleged that he contacted Ayakha’s biological father and told him to come and get his ‘parcel’ from the woods.
Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said that Mpungose will ‘face four counts of murder.’
“The children’s mother learned that the father had gone to fetch the children and became suspicious that he was up to something and went to the police for assistance,” she added.
“Police went to the house with the mother of the children and on entering the house found two children hanging in the main bedroom and another hanging in another room.”
Nonhanhla Khoza, KZN Social Development chief, said: “This heartless man who is supposed to protect his children allegedly fetched them from school only to kill them all like this.”
