When Lewis was 11 years old he faced some health issues but then till the age of 17 he was diagnosed with a kidney disease named IgA nephropathy.
The early days went well as he continued his daily chores such as working for 12 hours in a shift and playing rugby but after some time his condition got worse.Lewis felt as if he had died when his kidney stopped functioning.
At first, he was diagnosed with Henoch schonlein in which blood vessels get inflamed. He tried to control his blood pressure with medicine but after his condition deteriorated his new GP did some of his blood tests. It was found that his creatinine, potassium, and urea levels were up. His kidney had a renal function of only 9%.
Now that Lewis was 26 years old so doctors suggested that only a kidney transplant could save him. But he was not ready to get a donation from any family member and to put them in risk. Scott Morlen who is Lewis’s father couldn’t resist after watching his son in that condition and got registered as a donor.
He gets his tests done to check if he is a suitable donor or not so for that purpose he went 15 rounds of nerve-wracking tests.
When Lewis went on dialysis his father told him that he is going to be a donor and then both of them went on surgery. The surgery went well and he asked to see his father because at first Scott told us that Lewis was not ready so his father did not inform him that he will be a donor to him for a month.
After the surgery, he mustered up the courage and decided to work as a chef again. He said that “now I have a new kidney so I can work like I used to work before”.
Whereas Scott was completely fine after the eight weeks of surgery and just had a few aches and pain. He did what any father could do for his children as parents can not see their children being buried. He further added that “ I would give my life for my son”.
