Farmer Who Was Too Broke To Feed Pregnant Cows Wrote A Heartbreaking Letter

A broke farmer has shared how he made the painful decision to send his pregnant cows to a slaughterhouse as he couldn’t afford food for them anymore.

His dilemma was stressed by Alan Jones, who revealed part of the farmer’s plea for help on social media.

The farmer said his cows would’ve starved to death as he could no longer afford to buy food and the Government’s assistance had not arrived yet.

Alan Jones shared on Facebook: “The letters from farmers come in every day. In battalions.

“Part of one that landed on my desk this morning says this:

“Sending my cows to slaughter because I couldn’t afford to feed them and watching that day they were loaded were the last of my future breeders going to die, with calves in their bellies just two months away from being born.

“Unforgivable and heartbreaking. They would have starved had I kept them because I couldn’t source or afford feed. The assistance just didn’t get here in time.

“It still hasn’t. An epic failure of our Government. Too little, too late. Too late now and frankly I’m yet to see how we are helped on the ground.

The Morrison Government announced earlier this year the changes to a financial assistance program to help struggling farmers.

It was announced in October that couples who are reaching the end of the 4-year limit on Farm Household Allowance will receive $13,000. Those who are singles will receive $7,500.

The bill will let farmers get the FHA payment 4 years in every decade, and let them earn $100,000 a year outside of farming.
