‘My Son Was Left Furious After I Changed My WILL To Leave Him My $3 Million Home But Am I The One In The Wrong Here?’

An elderly couple has revealed how their son was left furious after they changed their will to leave him their $3 million family home.

The worried mother took to Reddit and said that their will have caused family problems, explaining that they initially wanted to leave the property to their younger son.

But after he expressed his disinterest, they decided to change their wills and leave the property to their older son.

“My partner and I have two sons. The older is married and doesn’t plan on having children, the younger is also married but with two young kids,” the mother wrote.

“The older lives in the same state as us while the younger is about 8 hours away. Both own their own homes already and are for the most part financially stable.”

She then explained that their $3 million home has been in the family for generations.

“It’s on an estate with a few hundred acres of land and the building itself is mostly original,” she explained.

When her younger son visited with his wife and children, the mom told him that the house would be his.

“He winced a little and I asked what was wrong. He admitted that he doesn’t want the house or anything to do with it. His family has no intention of moving back north and if they did it would be the other side of the state,” she went on.

Even though she was disappointed, she and her husband decided to change their wills and give the entire house to their older son while their investments and bank accounts, which were worth around $2 million, would go to their younger.

However, the older son was left furious by the decision.

“We had a group call and brought up the new will,” the mother continued. “My oldest was upset to say the least. He said he can’t move to the house either since he and his wife both work in the other side of the state and love their jobs.

“I said they could have someone maintain the house when they aren’t using it but he just got annoyed and said that would be a massive drain on their finances, let alone property tax and if anything breaks and needs repair.”

The mother then said he was being a brat as his younger brother lives farther and has children to take care for so the house does not work for him.

In an update to her post, the mother explained that the house cannot be sold by them or either son.

“Previous owners made a deal with the town to pay less in property taxes in exchange for the surrounding acreage being public trails. It also had a provision that the house cannot be sold publicly, if we no longer wanted it the town will buy it for land value.”

Their older son accused them of favoring his brother and said that when elder care comes up, he is the one closer to them.

Reddit users were divided by the situation, with one person commenting: “You are trying to make your children take on a burden as the last thing you do before death. That is soooooo messed up.”

Another wrote: “The house is not worth three million, because it can never be sold so take it off the table and split the other assets evenly between them.

“Then when the town takes the house for its land value, they can also split that money. You should not ask your kids to maintain this home after you are gone.”
