“When he stepped outside he told Ona, ‘It’s awful quiet outside and there’s no wind — there’s nothing out here.’ She said, ‘Oh yes there is. Get to the storm shelter now,’” the couple’s friend, Julie Moore, recalled in an interview with The Dodo.

According to the reports, Bruce and Ona immediately started evacuating whereas Ona helped move a disabled man who also lives at their home into the storm shelter while Bruce searched the house for their pets, including two dogs and four cats.

As Julie explained, one of the cats couldn’t be found, whereas Dasha the dog had to be left behind because she refused to move.

With no time left to evacuate, Bruce was forced to make a run for it and leave one of the family dogs in the house after the pooch wouldn’t let him move her.

“Dasha could sense that something was wrong and she went to the kitchen and lay down. Bruce didn’t know what to do … by the time he got to the storm shelter he could barely get the door to shut,” Moore added.

On the following day, the family witnessed the true devastation of the tornado as they saw their home with the roof ripped off.

While inspecting the area and looking for Dasha, the family was positively surprised as the pooch came running towards them uninjured.

“Ona just grabbed her fur and grabbed her face and started talking to her, saying, ‘I’m sorry. We’re here,’” Julie explained after taking pictures of the reunion.

“[She] talks to her like a person and Dasha actually responded like a person — they kissed each other.”

While the couple was thrilled to be reunited with Dasha, they knew that one of their pets, the cat named Ladybug, was still missing.

Fortunately, however, Ladybug was soon found as well.

“She was wet, she was cold and shaking. Ona just grabbed her up and started pulling the sheetrock out of her fur, and just squeezed her and hugged her,” Julia added.
