‘Am I In The Wrong For Making My Mother-In-Law Cry After I Told Her That I Don’t Want A Gender Reveal Party?’

A pregnant woman has shared how her mother-in-law broke down in tears after she told her that she didn’t want a gender reveal party.

The mother-to-be took to Reddit and explained that gender reveals make her ‘uncomfortable’ but her husband’s mother was demanding she threw one anyway.

“My husband and I are expecting a baby. We are planning to move to my home country [when the baby is born] because the cost of having a baby there is much much less,” she wrote.

Because she knew that her mother-in-law would miss her son and grandchild, she decided to include her in all doctor’s appointments, events, and milestones.

But when her MIL asked when she would throw a gender reveal party, she told her that she didn’t feel comfortable about it.

“So I told her that it was very nice but I’d prefer not to. If she wanted, we could just do a bigger baby shower instead,” she said.

But during a routine scan, her mother-in-law brought up the idea again but she turned her down.

“We went do the doctor. My husband was working so it was only my mother-in-law and me. The doctor asks me if I want to know the gender of the baby and I say yes. My mother-in-law shushes me and says no. She says to put it in an envelope so we can give it to the person responsible for the gender reveal,” the mom-to-be continued.

But when she rejected the idea, her mother-in-law got impatient and left the appointment in tears.

Her MIL then called her husband saying that she had been horrible to her. Her husband said that he was also not a fan of gender reveal parties but her mother was sad so they should just play along.

People on Reddit were on the pregnant woman’s side, with most commenters saying it should be her decision, not her mother-in-law’s.

One person wrote: “You absolutely deserve to have your wishes and boundaries respected. I think your husband needs to explain to his mother that its his and your child, and you do actually get a say in what you wish to happen throughout your pregnancy.”

Another said: “The doctor asked you if you wanted to know the sex of the baby. As the mother, that’s your bloody decision. Your mother-in-law can mind her own damn business.”
