A grandmother who accidentally sent a message to a complete stranger about her Thanksgiving plans has confirmed that they will be spending the holiday together for the seventh time.
65-year-old Wanda Dench and 23-year-old Jamal Hinton became friends after she invited him to her 2016 Thanksgiving dinner thinking he was her grandson.
However, the mishap changed both of their lives and has even inspired a new Netflix movie.
The pair said that their special bond is more than just getting fame.
Speaking with NBC News correspondent Kristen Dahlgren, Hinton said: “I told her the cameras and the fame, everything could stop tomorrow, and nothing’s changing between us.”
“Absolutely,” Dench added.
“He’s in my heart for life.”
Earlier this year, Hinton started a car painting and tinting business and put Dench on his advertising billboard to honor their friendship.
“I’ve always told her whatever I’m doing, she’s a part of, no matter what it is,” Hinton said.
He was also there for the grandmother when she got her first tattoo, revealing that they are planning to get matching tattoos.
The two first met in 2016 when Dench sent him a text message asking if he was coming to Thanksgiving dinner at her house as she thought he was her grandson.
When Hinton, who was still 17, explained that he wasn’t his grandson, he asked if he could ‘still get a plate tho?’
The grandmother replied: “Of course you can, that’s what grandmas do, feed everyone.”
In an interview with Today last year, Hinton said that he was shocked when Dench quickly replied and said that he could join her family for the holiday.
“Yes, there was a huge amount of hesitation because it was all just a joke,” he said.
“I was in math class. I was taking a test. And I was just like, ‘Hey, why not?’ I’m just an outgoing person. I like to meet new people and then she said, “Yes,” and I was just starstruck, basically.”
