A family was left devastated after discovering that their baby’s ashes had been stolen by a thief during a home invasion.
When Sue LaDeur found out that her baby’s ashes were gone, she said she ‘couldn’t breathe.’
The family said that baby Billy passed away when he was only 10 years old and they cremated his remains.
“Billy was very sick from the beginning,” Mrs. Ladeur said. “Billy had a lot of problems, so he passed away at 10 days old.”
“His ashes and the small memorial, that’s all we have,” she expressed.
According to Elmhurst police, they were called to the family’s home for a report of burglary.
“It was the police who pointed out, ‘the dust is disturbed,’ and then I looked at that space,” Mrs. LaDeur continued. “I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t believe it. Of all the things to take. Take everything. Take anything. None of it matters.”
The family said all other items taken away are now irrelevant.
“Maybe someone thought it had jewellery in it, is all we can think of,” Mr. LaDeur said.
The LaDeur family hopes that the burglar will return their baby’s ashes. “It has no value to anyone but us,” Sue expressed.
“It’s all we have left of our child,” Mr. LaDeur added. “Let us have that back.”
Officers are currently checking CCTV footage from the neighborhood.
One internet user commented: “What an utter scumbag. This is absolutely heartbreaking.”
Another wrote: “I sincerely hope that the ashes are found, or even better, that the thief or thieves leave them on your doorstep. My thoughts are with Billy’s parents.”
Thief, if you’re reading this, please return the ashes to this heartbroken family.
