‘I CANCELED My Stepdaughter’s Birthday Surprise After She RUINED My Weekend But Am I The One Being Unreasonable Here?’

A woman has shared how she canceled the birthday surprise they arranged for her stepdaughter after she ‘ruined’ her weekend.

Taking to Mumsnet, the woman explained that her husband booked a weekend getaway where they enjoyed their honeymoon and arranged for stepdaughter to watch over their daughter, who has autism.

“Recently it was a big birthday of mine. My husband had arranged a surprise weekend away for me and him to go back to where we honeymooned (short haul destination) and organized for stepdaughter (20) to come and stay to look after daughter (11),” the woman wrote.

The stepmother explained that her husband had planned the trip months in advance and even arranged the date with her stepdaughter before booking.

“He says he’s also repeatedly discussed it over the phone,” she continued.

On the woman’s birthday, her husband surprised her with the gift and she got so excited as it’s been a long time since they had a vacation.

“Stepdaughter also called to wish me happy birthday I thanked her for having our daughter while we go away. ‘Aww no problem,’ she said,” the woman went on.

“Within minutes she phoned my husband asking when we go, she said she could no longer do that date as she had plans that couldn’t be changed (night out/seeing friends),” the frustrated mother said.

“There was no apology to either of us, I’ve not heard from her since, she would normally wish me happy Mother’s Day but I didn’t hear from her.”

The couple couldn’t find any available caregiver for their daughter, who has autism, at such short notice. Unfortunately, they had to cancel their weekend plans after they were let down by her stepdaughter.

“Her 21st is coming up and I had booked a gorgeous big cottage for a long weekend for us to celebrate, there’s room for her to bring her boyfriend and a couple of friends and for some extended family to join us too,” she went on.

“I paid the deposit last year and now the balance is due and in all honesty I don’t want to pay it any more, I feel like cancelling and losing the deposit. Not out of spite, but just a feeling of ‘why should I bloody bother?’” she added.

Mumsnet users sided with the woman, with one writing: “You can simply cancel on the basis that she’s not reliably prepared to save dates.”

Another said: “I think you’d be unreasonable if you didn’t cancel the reservation. What she did was so out of order.”
