However, their ‘misleading joke’ suddenly backfired as their families started to spit hurtful words.

The woman explained that she and her husband had given their families ‘fake’ baby name suggestions as they didn’t want to tell anyone yet that they had picked for their child.

Taking to Reddit, the expecting mother explained that she and her husband already have some names and how an innocent joke turned into chaos.

“When asked by family what we were thinking for names, we made the mistake of telling them,” she wrote.

“My husband and I are really nerdy and we’re also into mythology and are big gamers. We’re both very much the odd ones out in each of our families.”

The pregnant woman said that they wanted a ‘fandom’ name but something that wasn’t ridiculous.

“We mentioned this, which caused some relatives to get really p***y and start calling us names, saying we were being cruel (before they even heard what names are on the list).

“So, my husband and I shared a look and we had the same thought to just take the p**s . So, I said that if it was a boy, he’d be named Dovahkin (from Skyrim) and if it was a girl, she’d be named Elphaba (from Wicked),” she went on.

But the joke immediately backfired as their families started spitting hurtful comments.

“Well, it was chaos. They were super angry, my mother-in-law started crying because we’ve ‘ruined the child’s life already,’” she continued.

“We kept to our lie and made a hasty exit after nobody would calm down. We got nasty messages all night and this morning.”

Reddit users were quick to share their thoughts on the matter, with one person writing: “Your child, your choice.”

Another said: “Even if you did name your child something stupid because it’s a fandom you love, that’s not their place to criticize.”

But others also tried to defend the unborn child.

One person said: “Imagine going through middle school or trying to get a professional job if you were called some dumb fandom name like Khaleesi or Neo or Weasley or whatever. You will be teased for it, and it will count against you if you have a professional career.”

Another commented: “The child has to live with the name, not the parents and the child’s name should not be used as an advertisement for the hobbies and interests of the parents.”
