The desperate pleas from those who are working on the frontlines come as America becomes the first nation in the world to surpass 4 million patients who tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Among them, some 144,304 people have passed away because of it.

Moreover, the spread of the virus shows no signs of slowing down all across the nation. It was in this context that more than 150 medical staff, scientists and teachers signed a letter that urged politicians in all levels to once again reimpose strict lockdown measures.

The letter predicted that at current rates, 60,000 more Americans will perish due to the virus, brining the total number of deaths beyond the 200,000 mark. It remarked that this is happening as non-essential activities such as drinking in bars and getting tattoos are allowed.

Related experts and organizations, such as the US Center for Disease Control (CDC), has confirmed to media outlets such as CNN that Covid-19 is likely to become the leading cause of death for Americans this year.

Co-founder of Microsoft and humanitarian Bill Gates concurred with the grim expectations that the experts have put forth. Gates pointed at the fact that it is easier to curb the rate of infection in summer than in autumn, meaning that numbers will likely deteriorate as the weather cools down.

This is not to say that there are no positive aspects to the development of the virus. Dr. Deborah Birx, who is in charge of the White House Task Force on Covid-19, said the patient numbers seem to have hit a plateau in four southern states that emerged as new epicenters.

The four states that she is referring to are Arizona, California, Florida and Texas. Birx argued that the development of patients in the four states parallel the chart that was seen in New York earlier this year. New York state had been the initial epicenter for the pandemic in the US.

However, with state such as Missouri and New Mexico hitting new daily records for the number of patients that tested positive, the end still seems nigh for the virus.
