If you are a woman, your most dreaded moment might be pushing out a baby from your womb.
But in the current times, the bigger concern would be to make sure your child is not infected with the devastating virus.
An expecting mother Sabina was having a hard time breathing while carrying her baby. Sabina had tested positive for coronavirus.
As a result, her oxygen saturation levels were dangerously low and her obstetrician Maggie Blott chose to conduct an emergency cesarean on the 36-weeks-gone mother to save her unborn child as well Sabina.
For London’s Royal Free Hospital, it is the first case where C-section was performed by staff on a COVID-19 patient. So, the case had its own unique set of challenges.
All the staff present in the room wore full personal protective equipment to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while protecting the baby and the mother from any complications.
In Hospital: Fighting COVID-19 by BBC, the mother confessed that she was really scared as she was being taken for the surgery alone. Her partner Patrick was not allowed to be present in the room for the birth.
The father-to-be was seen pacing around the room and he confessed that he was in continuous stress. He noted that he had to wait for the answer regarding whether his baby girl was born yet.
Jane Lowery, consultant anesthetist was worried that the brave mother’s condition could worsen and admitted to not knowing how coronavirus would affect the mother-daughter during the birth.
There was also a pediatrician present to attend the baby in case of any emergency, while Sabina admitted to finding it difficult to breathe.
The staff work in the unprecedented conditions as they were forced to shout through their protective face masks. Thankfully, the surgery went successfully and Sabina delivered a healthy baby girl.
Then, overjoyed Patrick is showed who was more than happy to meet his daughter and his wife.
