Unfortunately, some people seem to forget this valuable lesson. Those who work with animals in particular too often overwork their animals and it is the animals who pay the price.

Horses are beautiful animals, however they can often be expensive to keep. But they are great for working jobs. Because of this, horses can be overworked to make the most money they can.

Among the many controversial jobs for horses is the tradition of horse drawn carriages – lugging tourists around the city. Some have claimed that this job has a dark side of being unsafe and owners of horse drawn carriages are accused of inhumane treatment of their horses.

Recently, an eyewitness captured the shocking effects this line of work can have on the horses in New York City.

The photographer, a Long Island native named Bogdan Paul Angheluta, caught this moment just after leaving a nightclub around 2 a.m. over Labor Day weekend.

Angheluta says that he was leaving the nightclub as he watched the driver of this horse drawn carriage encourage the horse to speed up in order to make the green light.  Unfortunately, the horse wasn’t able to keep up the fast pace and collapsed over onto its side due to exhaustion.

An investigation launched by the New York Carriage Industry later reported that the horse Norman, who is only 14 years old, had tripped and did not show any signs of exhaustion.

But Angheluta remains concerned about the animal’s welfare. Angheluta said that Norman, the horse, was lying on the street for about 20 minutes before he was able to get back up with the help of a group of men.

Angheluta had remained with the horse throughout the night and provided NYCLASS, an animal welfare group, with the information and pictures about the group who in turn contacted the NYPD.

NYClass has called on New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to bring in legislation that would ban the use of horse drawn carriages in the city. They claim that this incident among many others prove that this job is not safe for the horses.
