On an instinctive level, we know that exercise is good and that usually, we’re not getting enough of it.

Nowadays, we spend most of our work hours sitting in front of a desk, eating bad food, and watching TV or playing video games when we’re not working. It’s not surprising that obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases are very real and present dangers for the average person.

The benefits of adequate exercise are not limited to burning calories and sculpting a beach body to die for. Exercise also helps alleviate depression and for older people to maintain enough muscle tone and balance to ensure a better quality of life as they reach retirement age and beyond.

But too much of anything is bad and exercise is no different. The biggest gains in exercise happen in-between sessions as your body rebuilds muscles and bones to be stronger than ever. If you don’t allow enough rest, your body doesn’t get better and in fact may get worse. In more severe cases, one could get rhabdomyolysis which is essentially the rapid breakdown of muscle that could result in kidney failure.
