After Rose and Blanche have applied mud masks, Michael’s girlfriend, Lorraine, and her relatives arrived.

Rose tries to break the tension and says, “This is mud on our faces, we’re not really Black.”

Lorraine’s mother later voices her disapproval of the interracial marriage as she does not want her daughter to marry ‘a skinny white boy.’

When Dorothy voices her disapproval as well, Lorraine’s mother, Greta, asks, “Oh ya, why? Do you have something against black people?”

Dorothy’s friend Blanche Devereaux then said, “Of course, not! And, I resent the insinuation! Why we firmly believe that all men are created equal.”

Rose interrupts and says, “That’s a bunch of baloney.”

As people in the room look perplexed, Rose jokes they should watch ‘a white person dance down the line on Soul Train’ on the television.

Dorothy says, “Race is not even an issue, your daughter is twice my son’s age. What can a woman in his forties possibly have in common with a boy in his twenties.”

Blanche responds, “Sex!”

Lorraine’s mother tells her daughter the age gap doesn’t matter but urges her to date a young Black man.

Rose then tries to stop the argument by saying the couple is in love and adds, “We should be celebrating, not arguing whether or not it’s right!”

She also asks, “Can we all join hands and sing a chorus of the 1968 song Abraham, Martin and John?”

“Is she for real?” Lorraine’s mother asks as Dorothy confirms her pals’ behavior is genuine. “Frightening isn’t it?” Dorothy says.
