Creating some really cool stuff seems to be an unwritten rule of being a great dad.

With the dad traditionally being seen as the provider of the family, kids often interpret this to mean that they should be provided with all these nice toys and playthings.

What’s even better if the dad and his kids share the same love for a particular genre or activity because this will allow the dad to create great things for his kids while at the same time, he gets to enjoy the subject matter he loves.

In the case of a 40-year-old database programmer named Jack Thomson, that was science fiction and cosplay. The loving and skilled father managed to combine the two to create an epic “battlesuit” for his daughters that was an absolute hit whenever they show up for conventions. The costume is not just for the enjoyment of his kids but for his nephews and nieces as well.

And what’s great is that his two daughters just love riding in the costume.

Jack spent five months working on the suit out of his home in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and by the time he was done, he had an awesome costume that was so detailed that it really wouldn’t look out of place in Avatar, that James Cameron epic sci-fi movie.

The costume allows the “pilot” (in this case, his daughters) to get into the cockpit while Jack is walking in the back. This makes it look like his daughters are piloting the battlesuit.

While the intricate look of the costume makes it look like it cost thousands, the judicious use of plastic and foam meant that Jack only spent $450CAD on it.point 418 |

But even beyond the cost, what was really important was that his daughters enjoyed it.point 72 | That and the impressed reactions of onlookers who were suitably mind-blown over the costume.point 151 | 1

Jack said: “It was thrilling to see people’s reaction when my daughters would get in and out.

“Most people thought the pilot was a doll, and then they were shocked when they realized that I was inside, doing all the carrying.

“My children feel very lucky that they have a Dad who can make a costume that they can ride in.”
