Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet are getting divorced after nearly five years of marriage and 16 years of relationship.
Taking their fans by surprise, the couple issued a joint statement in which they announced that they are parting ways to “free each other to be who we are learning to become.”
The shocking statement was shared on Instagram by the 42-year-old Aquaman actor since his wife doesn’t have a presence on social media.
“We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times… A revolution is unfolding and our family is of no exception… feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring. And so we share our Family news that we are parting ways in marriage,” Bonet and Momoa wrote.
The couple added: “We share this not because we think it’s newsworthy but so that as we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty.
“The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other to be who we are learning to become.”
Though the celebrity couple offered little information about the cause of their split, they insisted that their devotion to their kids, 13-year-old Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa and 14-year-old Lola Lolani Momoa, remains unwavering.
Momoa and Bonet became an item shortly after meeting each other at a jazz bar back in 2005. The Game of Thrones star previously recalled his first impression of his partner in his 2017 interview with James Corden.
“We just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I actually had dreaded my hair for her. I had dreadlocks, she had dreadlocks. I literally turned around and I see her and she goes, ‘I’m Lisa,’” the Hollywood star revealed.
“I turned around to my friend and I [pretended to scream]. I had f—ing fireworks going off inside, man. I convinced her to take me home, because I was living in a hotel.”
From there, their relationship grew stronger with Momoa often referring to his partner as a “queen” and his “dream woman.”
