John Reynolds from California would drink an energy drink every day to stay alert at his night shift as a mechanic.

John, who didn’t drink or smoke, struggled to breathe when he woke up one day in 2011.

His wife Cassondra performed CPR and then he was rushed to a hospital. It turned out he had suffered a cardiac arrest and was then put into a medically induced coma.

Unfortunately, John’s life support was turned off after doctors pronounced him brain dead.

He died in February 2011 leaving behind his wife Cassondra and their three sons.

Cassondra said: “John was healthy, he worked out every day, he had had a full physical examination the month prior and all his results came back fine.”

But, when he went to the hospital, the doctor told Cassondra that his sugar levels were sky-high.

They asked her about his lifestyle and if he had any health issues.

She added: “He was put in a medically induced coma and a therapeutic state of hypothermia to try and prevent any further damage to his brain caused by a lack of oxygen.”

When the doctors asked if he drank energy drinks, she replied ‘yes, but only once a day.’

The doctor then told her that only one energy drink can cause a heart arrhythmia.

Cassondra says John was a really good dad and the best husband and watching him die in front of her eyes was the most painful thing for her.

She said: “I felt like my heart was physically breaking. He was the love of my life and my soul mate. You can’t move on when your heart belongs to someone else.”

She now wants to raise awareness about the dangers of these drinks. Cassondra said she was told by the doctor that drinking energy drinks is like playing Russian roulette with your life.
